You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=Charlotte's age; x+5=Charlotte's age 5 years hence
x-12=Betty's age;x-12+5=x-7=Betty's age 5 years hence
2(x-12)=Ann's age; 2x-24+5=2x-19=Ann's age 5 years hence
So, our equation to solve is:
x+5=2(x-7)get rid of parens
x+5=2x-14 subtract 2x and also 5 from each side
x-2x+5-5=2x-2x-14-5
-x=-19
x=19---------------------------------------Charlotte's age
x-12=19-12=7-----------------------Betty's age
2(x-12)=2*7=14--------------------Ann's age
CK
"Ann is twice as old as Betty"----14 vs 7---OK
"Betty is 12 years younger than Charlotte"---19-7=12---OK
"In 5 yrs Charlotte will be twice as old as Betty"--- 24 vs 12---OK
Hope this helps ----ptaylor
