Take the square root of each.
Use the sign of the middle term.

m^2 - 2m + 1
(m^2-2m+1)+1-1
The 1 inside the parenthesis came from taking half of the coefficient of the middle term(1), then squaring it (1^2)=1.
The (-1) outside the parenthesis was added in to balance the 1 we added inside the parenthesis.
(m^2-2m+1)+1-1
=(m^2-2m+1) which is a perfect square
factor: (m-1)^2
m comes from the sqrt of the first term and 1 comes from the sqrt of the last term of the perfect square. The negative sign always matches the sign of the middle term.
