Question 532258: I am going crazy trying to help my 9 yr old grandson with this math problem.
I truly believe there is a mistake,can someone help,please!!
There are 36 people coming to grandma's house for Thanksgiving dinner. There are 24 adults, and 8 children. According to Butterball, a 12# turkey will feed five adults and two children. How many turkeys will grandma need if she buys 23# turkeys. Will there be leftovers for sandwiches?

Four 12 pounders wouldn't be enough because that would only feed 20 adults and 8 children. So, you would, if you were buying 12 pounders, need to buy five. Five 12 pounders is 60 lbs of turkey, enough to feed 1 more adult and 2 more children than are expected.

Two 23# turkeys is 46 lbs. Three is 69 lbs. 46 isn't enough, but 69 is about 12 lbs too much. You have to buy three to have enough, but there will be plenty of sandwiches over the next week.

Probably something is missing, or some numbers are wrong, or it is a really weird problem. Maybe a trial and error strategy is expected.
Anyway, something seems wrong, because if there are 36 people, with 24 adults and 8 children, what are the other 4 people? Babies, who will not eat turkey?
24+8=32
36-32=4
I would imagine "a 12# turkey" means a 12-pound turkey, and "23# turkeys" means 23-pound turkeys.
Maybe the students are expected to make a table showing total weight of turkey, and maximum amount of adults and children that it would serve. They would notice that four 12-pound turkeys (48 pounds total) feed only 20 adults and 10 children, and you cannot be sure it's enough.
Grandma needs more than 48 pounds worth of turkey.
The students would see that five 12-pound turkeys (60 pound total weight) would feed 25 adults and 10 children, and that would definitely be enough.
However, grandma would only buy 23-pound turkeys (maybe all the small birds were sold out, or maybe she likes them big). So, she will have to buy three (69 pounds total), because two of those big birds (46 pounds total) is less than 48 pounds and will clearly not be enough.
With three 23-pound turkeys, she should have leftovers.
