Question 5315: Hello I'm very poor when it comes to math I trying to brush up on my algebra skills
When evaluating I have to solve for x
34 - 10x=6x+2
Here is my work:
34 - 10x=6x+2
34 - 10x + 10x=6x+2
2+34=6x+2
36=6x and from here I lost the pro
Also I have problems include letters this is really confusing
ex.
b +ax =c
ax = bx +c
ax - b = cx + d
The book I'm using is not really clear on the subject, "Algebra the easy wasy" 3rd edition
Thank you

right then....

First, algebra is very simple in the fact that there are only a few simple rules to remember and you apply them. You do not apply your version of the rules :-)

With equations - one side equals the other side, like a balance. What you do to one side, you have to do to the other side, to keep that balance. So, we need to end up with x=answer (or strictly, 1x=answer)

34 - 10x = 6x + 2 --> we will remove the +6x term from the right hand side. How? by subtracting 6x from both sides:

34 - 10x -6x = 6x + 2 -6x
34 - 16x = 2 --> Now we will remove the +34 from the left hand side. How? By subtracting 34 from both sides:

34 - 16x - 34 = 2 - 34
-16x = -32 --> now we want to convert the -16x into 1x. Note the x is unchanged, so we need to figure out how to manipulate the -16 by itself and convert it into a 1. Answer is to divide by -16, since -16/-16 is 1. And we do the same to both side remember:

-16x/-16 = -32/-16
--> x = 2

That is your answer.

ANY further question you are liable to do in algebra using the same simple approach as this.

I do not understand what you want to do with the other equation. Please explain. Or better, you have a go first then send in your answer to me to check.

It is GREAT that you are trying to show work!
34 - 10x=6x+2
You have the right idea of moving all variable stuff on one side, and all number stuff to another side.
Looks like you tried to add 10x, but remember that with equations, you have to do it to both sides!
Let's try to add 10x to both sides:
34-10x%2Bhighlight%2810x%29=6x%2B2%2Bhighlight%2810x%29
10x-10x cancels out on the left
34 = 6x+10x+2
subtract 2 from both sides
34-2 = 6x+10x+2-2
2-2 cancels out:
32 = 6x+10x
32=16x
divide both sides by 16
2=x
x=2
that's your solution
