Question 531208: Tom can mow his lawn in 6 hours. If Julia helps Tom, the job gets done in 2 hours. How many hours would it take Julia working alone? Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Tom can mow his lawn in 6 hours. If Julia helps Tom, the job gets done in 2 hours. How many hours would it take Julia working alone?
------
Tom's rate: 1/6 job/hr
Together rate: 1/2 job/hr
Julia rate: 1/x job/hr
----------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/6 + 1/x = 1/2
Multiply thru by 12x
2x + 12 = 6x
4x = 12
x = 3 hrs (time for Julia to do the job alone)
