Question 530017: One number is 2 more than 5 times another. Their product is 39. Find the numbers.
 Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659)      (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! "One number is 2 more than 5 times another. Their product is 39. Find the numbers."

x = one number
5x + 2 = other number

x(5x + 2) = 39 {their product is 39}
5x^2 + 2x = 39 {used distributive property}
5x^2 + 2x - 39 = 0 {subtracted 39 from both sides}
(5x - 13)(x + 3) = 0 {factored into two binomials}
5x - 13 = 0 or x + 3 = 0 {set each factor equal to 0}
5x = 13 or x = -3 {added 13 and subtracted 3, respectively}
x = 13/5 or x = -3 {divided first equation by 5}
5x + 2 = 15 or 5x + 2 = -13 {substituted 13/5 and -3, in for x}

The numbers are:
13/5 and 15
and
-3 and -13
