x = 16*83
x = 1328
.
Take away the best score and the average is 82
.
y/15 = 82
y = 15*82
y = 1230
.
Therefore, the best score was 1328 - 1230 = 98.

Let s = sum of scores of all 16 students in class
Let h = the highest score of the 16 students
With all the students in class:
(1) +83+=+s+%2F+16+
With highest score taken away:
(2) +82+=+%28+s+-+h+%29+%2F+15+

(2) +15%2A82+=+s+-+h+
