Question 52621: find two consecutive even integers whose sum is 217.
I have no idea what to do on that problem.
Thanks if someone can help. Found 2 solutions by stanbon, checkley71:Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Find two consecutive even integers whose sum is 217.
------------
Even numbers are always a multiple of 2.
Let the 1st number be "2x"
The next consecutive even number is "2x+2"
EQUATION:
2x+2x+2=217
4x+2=217
4x=215
x is not an integer.
WHY?
The sum of two even integers must be even; it cannot be 217.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! x+(x+2)=217 or 2x+2=217 or 2x=217-2 or 2x=215 or x=107.5 then x+2=107.5+2=109.5
proof 107.5+109.5=217 opr 217=217
107.5 & 109.5 are not even integers???????
two even integers added will result in an even interger. 217 is not one of them.
