Question 524858: A plane traveled 1089 miles to Houston and back. The trp there was with the wind. It took 9 hours.The trip back was into the wind. The trip back took 11 hours. What is the speed of the plane in still air? what is the speed of the wind? Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Plane speed= x mph
Wind speed= y mph
with wind (x+y)
against wind (x-y)
d= 1089 with Wind
1089 / (x+y) = 9
divide by 9
121 / (x+y) = 1
(x+y) = 121 ............1
d= = 1089 against wind
1089 /(x-y)= 11
divide by 11
99 /(x-y) = 1
x - y =99
add up (1) & (2)
2 x = 220
/ 2
x= 110 mph speed of Plane
plug value of x in (1)
we get y= 11 mph speed of Wind
