You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Trick question unless you fly frequently.
.
The Rockets' plane departs at 1 p.m. and flies to Portland in 3 hours. You might add to the 1 p.m. departure time the flying time of 3 hours to determine that they arrived at 4 p.m. You might do that, but you would be wrong because:
.
Houston is in the Central Time Zone and Portland is in the Pacific Time Zone. When the plane departed Houston (at 1 p.m.) the time was 2 hours earlier out west. So in Portland the time of departure for the Rocket's plane was 11 a.m. Now add to 11 a.m. the 3 hours flying time, and you get the correct answer. The Rockets plane arrives in Portland at 2 p.m. local (Portland) time, 5 hours before the 7 p.m. game time.
.
The reason that there is 2 hours of difference in time between Houston and Portland is that going west, if you depart on Central Time, you cross the Mountain Time zone which is 1 hour behind Houston in time, and then enter the Pacific Time zone which is 2 hours behind Houston in time.
.
Hope this helps you to understand part of the problem that fast transportation can cause for travelers.
