let's say the son is "X" years old
the father would be "3X" years old.
in 12 years it'll be (X+12=2X).the preceding equation translates the second part of the problem.
now let's solve for X. X+12=2X, if we subtract X from both side we got X=12.
so remember the father's age was 3X=3(12), which makes the father's age 36 now.(final answer)
