Question 523230: To remain on financial aid, Millie needs to complete an average of at least 7 credits per quarter each year. In the first three quarters of 2009, Millie completed 5, 7, and 8 credits. How many credits of course work must Millie complete in the fourth quarter if she is to remain on financial aid?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Since Millie is to average 7 credits each quarter, she is expected to complete 28 credits (an average of 7 credits per quarter times 4 quarters) in the 4 quarters.
.
In the first three quarters she completed a total of 20 credits (5 + 7 + 8). So Millie has to complete 8 credits in the fourth quarter to stay on financial aid.

Hope this helps you to understand how to work this problem. It is a useful analysis that works just as well for test scores. Example, if I want to average at least 88 on 4 tests after scoring 91, 89 and 80 on my first three tests, what do I have to score on my final test to make my desired average score of 88. Answer: 88 * 4 = 352 points I need total. On three tests I have gotten a total of 260 points. So I need 352 minus 260 = 92 on the fourth test. With at least 92 points on the fourth test I will average 88 (or more if I score above 92).
