Question 522777: carol is 25 years older than her cousin amanda. in 18 years ,carol will be twice as old as amanda will be. how old are carol and amanda now? Answer by Maths68(1474) (Show Source):
Carol is 25 years older than her cousin amanda.
c=a+25............(1)
In 18 years
Carol will be = c+18
Amanda will be = a+18
Then
carol will be twice as old as amanda will be
c+18=2(a+18)
c+18=2a+36
c=2a+36-18
c=2a+18............(1)
Put the value of c from (1) to (2)
a+25=2a+18
a-2a=18-25
-a=-7
Multiply by -1 both sides of the equation
a=7
Put the value of a in (1)
c=a+25
c=7+25
c=32
Present age of Carol = c = 32 years old
Present age of Amanda = a = 7 years old
