You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A man is rowing a boat up a river and his hat falls in the water.
He doesn't notice and keeps rowing for ten minutes before he realises his hat is gone.
He turns his boat and rows after it. He rows and retieves his hat which has floated three kilometres downstream from the where it fell in the water.
How fast was the river flowing?
:
The boat and the hat are moving with the current at the same rate, therefore
if he rowed 10 min away from the hat he would take 10 min to get back to the hat.
A total of 20 min. The hat traveled 3 km in 20 min, 1/3 of an hr, therefore:
3 * 3 = 9 km/hr is the flow rate of the river
