Question 522427: A cheetah spots a gazelle 132 meters away. The cheetah starts towards the gazelle at a speed of 18 meters per second. At the same instant, the gazelle starts moving away from the gazelle at 11 meters per second. How long will it take the cheetah to get dinner?
Could you please solve this and show me the equation you used to solve it.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A cheetah spots a gazelle 132 meters away. The cheetah starts towards the gazelle at a speed of 18 meters per second. At the same instant, the gazelle starts moving away from the cheetah at 11 meters per second. How long will it take the cheetah to get dinner?
------
Cheeta DATA:
rate = 18 m/s ; time = t seconds ; distance = rt = 18t meters
------
Gazelle DATA:
rate = 11 m/s ; time = t seconds ; distance = rt = 11t meters
-----
Equation:
gazelle +132 meters = cheetah
-----
11t + 132 = 18t
7t = 132
t = 18.857 seconds (time for the cheetah to catch the gazelle)

I assume you mean that the gazelle moved away from the cheetah at 11 meters.

At the beginning, the cheetah and gazelle are 132 meters apart.

r*t=d
18*t=132+11t
7t=132
t=132/7
t=18.8571 seconds

The Cheetah does not get dinner with this one.
A Cheetah can only maintain a speed of 18 meters per second for ~17 seconds. At that point the cheetah's brain overheats and if she does not stop, she will collapse and terminate. (yes, die.)
It will take over 18 seconds at this distance / speed circumstance.
rate * time = distance
18*t = 132 + 11t
7t=132
t=132/7
t=18.8571 seconds
18.86 > ~17 So, Gazelle lives another day!
