Question 52209: This is "solving equation and problems" "Transforming equations-multiplication and division".
1/2x=22
I read something about getting the reciprocal of 1/2 so i guess 2/1. i dunno. can some one help by explaining the WHOLE precess to me. I think these are fractions, bu it could be division. I feel so stupid. Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Whenever you see a fraction, division is going on
Whenever you are asked to do a division, you can
always express the division as a fraction
OR, fractions are division and division is fractions
-------------
One of the best tools you can use when working with
fractions is the rule:
If you multiply the top and the bottom of a fraction
by the same quantity, the fraction does not change
--------------
That's because and and
They are all equal to 1 exactly.
So, if I have the fraction 1/3, all these are true

All of these are the exact same thing as and that
is just
So, what if you have the strange fraction that looks like
?
This is the RECIPROCAL of 1/3
just apply the rule I gave you, but choose the carefully
multiply this fraction by 3/3. One more useful fact: you can
always write a number this way with out changing it:
because dividing by one doesn't change the number
Back to the fraction
multiply it by 3/3
take a deep breath. You haven't changed anything.
It's still 1/3. Now just let the number on top associate with eachother and
same for the bottom
another deep breath.
You still haven't changed anything
Now you just have to realize that Three thirds is one
You still haven't changed anything
Now note that 3*1 = 3 just the same as 3/1 = 3 so,

and
You STILL haven't changed anything!
So, going ALL the way back,
The reciprocal of 1/3 equals 3.
Think in these tiny steps. Don't try to jerk your brain
ahead too far (It hurts the brain). Hope I helped
