Question 520875: ramon and liza found two snails that were trudging along together in the driveway. Having nothing to do, Liza and Ramon decided to figure out how fast they were moving. They determined that one was craling at a page of 15 mm/min and the other one at 10 mm/min. At these rates, how long will it take for the snails to be 10 centimeters apart?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
10 cm is 100 mm
Let t = time in minutes for snails to get 100 mm apart
For fast snail:
(1) +d%5B1%5D+=+15t+
For slow snail:
(2) +d%5B2%5D+=+10t+
and
(3) +d%5B1%5D+-+d%5B2%5D+=+100+
-----------------
There are 3 equations and 3 unknowns
so, it's solvable
Subtract (2) from (1)
(1) +d%5B1%5D+=+15t+
(2) +-d%5B2%5D+=+-10t+
+d%5B1%5D+-+d%5B2%5D+=+5t+
Substituting:
+100+=+5t+
+t+=+20+
It will take 20 min for them to be 10 cm apart
