You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Husband --------x years
alice-----------x-4 years
17 years ago
Alice = x-4-17=>x-21
x-4=2(x-21)
x-4=2x-42
2x-x=38
x=38 years
husband 38 years
Alice = 34 years

alice is 4 years younger than her husband, and twice as old now as she was 17 years ago. how old are they?
-------------------------------
Equations:
a = h-4
a = 2*17 = 34
----------------------
Substitute for "a" and solve for "h":
34 = h-4
husband's age = 34+4 = 38 yrs of age
