Question 519496: you were a quarter of my age when I was twice your present age" said A to B. In five years from now, our ages will add upto 45. how old was i when i was born? Answer by oberobic(2304) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! People are considered 0 years old when they are born.
.
That said, if you mean "how old was I when you were born", then there is a way to calculate it.
.
A = one person's current age
B = another person's current age
.
In five years from now..
A's age will be A+5
B's age will be B+5
A+5 + B+5 = 45
so
A + B = 35
.
Now the tricky part is to figure out what the person said.
It appears to be: 1/4 of my present age = twice your present age.
.
1/4A - 2B = 0
.
A -8B = 0
.
(35-B) -8B = 0
35 -9B = 0
35 = 9B
9B = 35
B = 35/9 = 3 8/9
.
A = 35- 35/9
A = 315/9 -35/9 = 280/9
.
check
280/9 + 35/9 = 315/9 = 35
So adding 5 years to both ages will make the sum = 45.
correct
.
Twice B's current age = 70/9
Does this equal 1/4 of A's current age?
Yes it does.
.
A = 280/9
B = 35/9
.
Re-read the question to be sure to answer it.
.
"How old was I when you were born?"
.
280/9 -35/9 = 245/9
