Question 51816: Hi, My daughter has a word problem that we cannot figure out. She has not been issued a book yet. Please help with the 2 problems below. Thanks so much!!
Problem 1- The local library had a sale to get rid of books that were slightly damaged. It sold paperbacks books for $2.00 and hardback books for $5.00. The library raised $271.00 and sold 89 books. How many hardcover books were sold?
Problem 2- At a record store CD's are $15.00 a piece and Vinyl Records are $10.00 a piece. If JoBob buys 20 albums at $225.00 then how many CD's did JoBob buy? How many Vinyl Records?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Problem 1- The local library had a sale to get rid of books that were slightly damaged. It sold paperbacks books for $2.00 and hardback books for $5.00. The library raised $271.00 and sold 89 books. How many hardcover books were sold?
--------------
Let the number of $2 books sold be "x".
Value of those book is 2x dollars.
The number $5 books sold is 89-x.
Value of those books is 5(89-x)= 445-5x dollars
EQUATION:
value + value = 271 dollars
2x+445-5x=271
-3x= - 174
x=58 (This is number of $2 paperback books were sold)
89-58- 31 (This is number of $5 hardcopy books sold)
-------------

Problem 2- At a record store CD's are $15.00 a piece and Vinyl Records are $10.00 a piece. If JoBob buys 20 albums at $225.00 then how many CD's did JoBob buy? How many Vinyl Records?
------------
Let number of $15 CD's be "x"
Value of these is 15x dollars
Number of Vinyl Records is "20-x"
Value of these is 10(20-x)=200-10x dollars.
EQUATION:
value + value = 225 dollars
15x+200-10x=225
5x=25
x=5 (This is number of CD's bought)
20-x=15 (This is number of vinyl records bought)
