Start with the formula for the area of a rectangle:
A+=+L%2AW
But the length, L, is given as:
L+=+3W-2 "...length is 2ft. less than three times its width." Substitute this into the area formula.
A+=+%283W-2%29%2AW Simplify.
highlight%28A+=+3W%5E2-2W%29 This is the function you need.
When the width is 2ft., then W = 2, so substitute.
A+=+3%282%29%5E2-2%282%29
A+=+12-4
A+=+8
So when the width is 2ft., the area is 8sq.ft.
