Question 517717: In a river with a steady current, it takes the bionic women 6 minutes to swim a certain distance upstream, but it takes her only 3 minutes to swim back. How many minutes would it take a doll of the bionic women to float this same distance downstream. Found 2 solutions by gc2000, ankor@dixie-net.com:Answer by gc2000(22) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! In a river with a steady current, it takes the bionic women 6 minutes to swim a certain distance upstream, but it takes her only 3 minutes to swim back.
How many minutes would it take a doll of the bionic women to float this same distance downstream.
:
It may be easier to just assume a distance: 240 meters
then = 40 m/min speed upstream
and = 80 m/min speed downstream
:
Let s = speed in still water
Let c = speed of the current, the dolls speed,
:
s - c = 40
s + c = 80
-----------adding eliminates c, find s
2s = 120
s = 60 m/min in still water
find c
60+c = 80
c = 80 - 60
c = 20 m/min speed of the current
:
Find the time for doll to drift 240 m at 20 m/min = 12 min for the doll to float the same distance.
