X + 9 -=sum of a number and 9
2(x+9) = double the sum of a number and 9
2(x + 9) = -8 … this is your equation to solve
2(x + 9) = -8
2x + 18 = -8
2x + 18 – 18 = -8 -18
2x = -26
2x/2 = -26/2
x = -13
