You can put this solution on YOUR website! You fill your cars gas tank when it is about 1/2 empty. The next week, you fill the tank a second time when it is about 3/4 empty. If you buy a total of 18 1/2 gal of gas on these two days, abput how many gallons does the tank hold?
.
Let x = amount (gallons) tank holds
then
(1/2)x + (3/4)x = 18.5
(2/4)x + (3/4)x = 18.5
(5/4)x = 18.5
5x = 74
x = 14.8 gallons
