12 coins in all. 

d + q = 12


 There are three times as many quarters as dimes. 

q = 3d


So we have this system of two equationa in two unknowns:

d + q = 12
q = 3d

Solve that system and get d = 3, q = 9, 3 dimes and 9 quarters
