two minor league baseball players got a total of 376 hits. Washington had 12 more hits than sanchez. Find the number of hits for each player.

We are told that Washington got 12 more hits than Sanchez.

w = s + 12
or
s = w -12
.
substitute w = s+12 in the total hits equation.

s+12 +s = 376
2s + 12 = 376
2s = 364
s = 182

Sanchez got 182 hits.

Substitute that to find Washington.

w + 182 = 376
w = 376 - 182
w = 194
