At noon you leave city X driving to city Y at 40mph. Two hours later your friend leaves city Y driving to city X at 60mph. The cities are 380 mile apart. What time do you meet?
**
let x=your driving time
x-2= friend's driving time
distance=speed*driving time
40x+60(x-2)=380
40x+60x-120=380
100x=500
x=5 hrs
ans:
You meet your friend at 5 PM

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
How much of a head start do you get?
+d%5B1%5D+=+40%2A2+
+d%5B1%5D+=+80+ mi
The distance between you is now +380+-+80+=+300+ mi
Start a stopwatch when your friend leaves- you both
will now travel for the same amount of time until you meet
Write both equations of motion:
For you:
(1) +d+=+40%2At+
For friend:
(2) +300+-+d+=+60t+
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2) +300+-+40t+=+60t+
(2) +100t+=+300+
(2) +t+=+3+
You will meet a 5 o'clock ( 2 o'clock + 3 hrs )
check answer:
for you:
(1) +d+=+40%2At+
(1) +d+=+40%2A3+
(1) +d+=+120+
For friend:
(2) +300+-+d+=+60t+
(2) +300+-+120+=+60t+
(2) +60t+=+180+
(2) +t+=+3+
OK
