Question 505220: I really need to know how to solve travel and distance
problems (word problems). I do understand the question,
but I can't get the equation. And especially, I am struggling about
solving how much you didn't travel in the problem.
for example: It takes 305km to drive to location A from your house. You estimate you drove at an average speed of 80KPH. It takes you 4 hours and 10 minutes to get to location A. How many hours were you NOT driving?
I really need help with this.
Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It takes 305km to drive to location A from your house. You estimate you drove at an average speed of 80KPH. It takes you 4 hours and 10 minutes to get to location A. How many hours were you NOT driving?
======================================================
The total time for the trip will be equal to the time spent driving plus the time spent NOT driving
Let t = the time spent not driving
The time spent driving will be the distance traveled divided by the average driving speed:
Driving time = 305 km/80 kph = 3.8125 h
The total time for the trip = 4 h 10 min, so we can solve for t:
t = 4 1/6 h - 3.8125 h = 0.354 h = 21.25 min
