: I would greatly appreciate some help with factoring. I understand that is basically means to divide, but when the book says simplify this: 5x + 2y/ 35x + 14y, it does not make sense to me in the examples in the book because I come up with something far different than the check figures in the back of the book. Here is what I have done so far: 1x + 1y / 7x + 7y. I also tried it this way:-1(5x +2y)/(35x +14y) = x+y/7x +7y. But it seems like there should be more to it than that. This question is from textbook beginning Algebra

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
%285x+%2B+2y%29%2F%2835x+%2B+14y%29
%285x+%2B+2y%29%2F%287%285x+%2B+2y%29%29 rule of thumb: (x + 1)/(x + 1) = 1
