You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A bus traveled on a level road for 3 hours at an average speed 20 miles per hour faster than it traveled on a winding road.
The time spent on the winding road was 2 hours.
Find the average speed on the level road if the entire trip was 285 miles.
:
Let s = av speed on the level road
then
(s-20) = av speed on the winding road
:
Write a dist equation: dist = speed * time
:
Lev Rd dist + winding Rd dist = 285 miles
3s + 2(s-20) = 285
3s + 2s - 40 = 285
5s = 285 + 40
5s = 325
s = 325/5
s = 65 mph on level roads
:
:
Check solution
3(65) + 2(65-20) =
195 + 90 = 285
