Question 503308:
Looking for x and Y I got x= -132/17 y= 176/ 17 and this was incorrect what is wrong how do i solve this?

2x + 5y = −16

6x − 9y= −48

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your values for x and y were not correct.
What I did was manipulated one of the equations so that that x's could cancel and give us the value of y. After having the value of y, we can plug that into one of the ORIGINAL equations and solve for x.
I multiplied (2x+5y=-16) by -3.
The problem now reads -6x-15y=48
So we now have the two equations:
-6x-15y=48
6x- 9y=-48.
Now add the two together to solve for y.
The x disappears since (-6x+6x=0)
We are left with -24y=0
Divide each side by -24, and you get:
y=0
Now that you have the value of y, take one of the ORIGINAL PROBLEMS and plug in the value of y.
So let's take 2x+5y=-16 and plug in the value of y (which is 0 in this case)
2x+5(0)=-16
2x=-16 divide each side by 2
x=-8

ANSWER=
X=-8
Y=0
