You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let
Present age of Jeremy = j
Present age of older sister = s
Present age of younger sister = y
Given
Jeremy is 5 years younger means if we subtract 5 from his older sister's present age both Jeremy and his older sister will be of equal age
j=s-5.........(1)
His older sister is 9 years older than her younger sister means if we subtract 9 from the older sister's present age both younger and older sisters will be of same age
y=s-9............(2)
Each of their ages equals 49
j+y+s=49.............(3)
Put the value of j from (1) and value of y from (2) to (3), we have
(s-5)+(s-9)+s=49
s-5+s-9+s=49
3s-14=49
3s=49+14
3s=63
Divide by 3 both sides of above equation
3s/3=63/3
s=21
Put the value of s in (1)
j=s-5.........(1)
j=21-5
j=16
Put the value of s in (2)
y=s-9............(2)
y=21-9
y=12
Present age of Jeremy = j = 16 years
Present age of older sister = s = 21 years
Present age of younger sister = y = 12 years
