Question 501771: may is 6 years younger than faye . Four years from now the product of thier ages is 352 find thier present ages Answer by Maths68(1474) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let
Present age of May = m
Present age of Faye = f
May is 6 years younger than Faye means if we subtract 6 from the Faye's age both Faye and May will be of equal age
m=f-6.......................(1)
Four years from now means we have to add 4 in present age of May and Faye
f+4=m+4
then the product of thier ages is 352
(f+4)(m+4)=352
fm+4f+4m+16=352
fm+4f+4m=352-16
fm+4f+4m=336 .................(2)
Put the value of m from (1) to (2)
f(f-6)+4f+4(f-6)=336
f^2-6f+4f+4f-24=336
f^2-6f+8f=336+24
f^2+2f=360
f^2+2f-360=0
Now solve for f
f^2-18f+20f-360=0
f(f-18)+20(f-18)=0
(f-18)(f+20)=0
f-18= o or f+20=0
f=18 or f=-20(Impossible)
so
f=18
Put the value of f in (1)
m=f-6
m=18-6
m=12
May is 12 and Faye is 18 years old
