Question 50120: Hi. Mr. Stanley moved 3/4 of the lawn in 1 and 1/4 hours. Mr. Samuels, who work twice as fast, finished mowing the lawn. How many minutes did Mr. Samuels work?
I got the answer 50 minutes but the book said that the answer was 12 and 1/2 minutes. Am I correct? And if not, can you please show me how to get the correct answer? Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Mr. Stanley moved 3/4 of the lawn in 1 and 1/4 hours. Mr. Samuels, who work twice as fast, finished mowing the lawn. How many minutes did Mr. Samuels work?
I got the answer 50 minutes but the book said that the answer was 12 and 1/2 minutes
----------------------
Stanley's rate is [3/4 job]/[5/4 hr]= (3/5) job/hr.
Samuels rate is twice that or (6/5)job/hr.
EQUATION:
Samual has to do 1/4 of the job in x hours at a rate of 6/5 job/hr
(rate)*(time) = job done
(6/5)x = 1/4
x=5/24 hrs.
x=(5/24)(60 minutes) = 12.5 minutes.
