Question 500844: one number is eight more than a second number. Four times the first is 8 less than 5 times the second. Find the numbers.
This is what i have tried
x=8+y
2x=4y-8
2(8+y)= 4y-8
16+2y=4y-8
16+2y-2y=4y-2y-8
16=2y-8
16+8=2y-8+8
24/2=2y/2
y=12

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
one number is eight more than a second number. Four times the first is 8 less than 5 times the second. Find the numbers.
Let numbers are x and y
Given
first number (x)
is equal to
8 more(+) than a second number (y) = 8+y
Our equation will be
x=8+y..........(1)
Second part of the question says
Four(4) times the first(x) = 4x
is equal to
Eight (8) less(-) than 5 times the second (y)=5y-8
Our equation will be
4x=5y-8........(2)
Plug in the value of x from (1) to (2)
4x=5y-8
4(8+y)=5y-8
32+4y=5y-8
4y=5y-8-32
4y=5y-40
4y-5y=-40
-y=-40
Multiply above equation by (-1)
(-1)(-y)=(-40)(-1)
y=40
Put the value of y in (1)
x=8+y .......(1)
x=8+40
x=48
Numbers are 40 and 48

Check
Put the value of x and y in either equation (1) or (2)
We take (2)
4x=5y-8
4(48)=5(40)-8
192=200-8
192=192
