You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let m = Max's age
Let k = Kay's age
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
" the sum of their ages are 25."
m + k = 25
:
"kay is two years less than twice the age of max."
k = 2m - 2
:
Look at the first equation, replace k with (2m-2)
m + (2m-2) = 25
3m = 25 + 2
3m = 27
m = 27%2F3
m = 9 yrs is Max's age which is what they ask for
:
:
But to check this out find Kay's age also
k = 2(9) - 2
k = 18 - 2
k = 16 yrs is Kay's present age
Confimr this by finding the sum
9 + 16 = 25, agrees with the 1st statement
:
Was this detailed enough to see a method for doing these type problems?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let K = Kay's age and M = Max's age.
highlight%28K%29%2BM+=+25 "...the sum of their ages (is) 25."
highlight%28K+=+2M-2%29 "Kay is two years less than twice the age of Max." Substutute this into the first equation.
highlight%28%282M-2%29%29%2BM+=+25 Simplify and solve for M.
3M-2+=+25 Add 2 to both sides.
3M+=+27 Divide both sides by 3.
M+=+9
Max is 9 years old.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +m+ = Max's age now
Let +k+ = Kay's age now
given:
(1) +m+%2B+k+=+25+
(2) +k+=+2m+-+2+ ( Kay is two years less than twice the age of Max. )
----------------
This is 2 equations with 2 unknowns, so it's solvable
Subtract +k+ from both sides of (2)
(2) +0+=+2m+-+k+-+2+
Add +2+ to both sides of (2)
(2) +2m+-+k+=+2+
Now add equations (1) and (2)
(1) +m+%2B+k+=+25+
(2) +2m+-+k+=+2+
+3m+=+27+
+m+=+9+
and, since
(1) +m+%2B+k+=+25+
(1) +9+%2B+k+=+25+
(1) +k+=+16+
Max is 9
