Question 499231: sum of two numbers = 14. product of the numbers=40. canu help me find the numbers? what is thier diffrence? Answer by Maths68(1474) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x and y are two numbers
x+y=14......(1)
xy=40.......(2)
x=40/y
Put the value of x in (1)
40/y+y=14
Multiply by y both sides of above equation
40+y^2=14y
Rearrage above equation
y^2-14y+40=0
Now slove for y
y^2-10y-4y+40=0
y(y-10)-4(y-10)=0
(y-10)(y-4)=0
(y-10)(y-4)=0
y-10=0 or y-4=0
y=10 or y=4
put the value of y=10 in (1)
x+y=14
x+10=14
x=14-10
x=4
if the one number is 4 the other number is 10 or if the one number is 10 other number is 4
difference of the numbers = 10-4=6
