Question 498987: If i take the equation x/3+x/5+x/6+x/4+6=x and simplify it to the point that i have 19x/20+6=x how would i go about solving this the rest of the way? I used the calculator and it gave me the answer but i didn't understand what to do after this point. Found 2 solutions by chessace, Theo:Answer by chessace(471) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! your equation is x/3 + x/4 + x/5 + x/6 + 6 = x
i used a common denominator of 120 to get:
40x/120 + 30x/120 + 24x/120 + 20x/120 + 6 = x
combining like terms gets:
114x/120 + 6 = x
simplifying gets:
19x/20 + 6 = x
this is where you're currently at.
subtract 19x/20 from both sides of the equation to get:
6 = x - 19x/20
x is equivalent to 20x/20 so your equation becomes:
6 = 20x/20 - 19x/20
combine like terms to get:
6 = (20x-19x)/20 which becomes:
6 = x/20
multiply both sides of the equation by 20 to gtet:
x = 120.
substitute for x in your original equation to get:
original equation equals:
x/3+x/5+x/6+x/4+6=x
after substitution equation becomes:
120/3 + 120/5 + 120/6 + 120/4 + 6 = 120
simplify to get:
40 + 24 + 20 + 30 + 6 = 120
simplify further to get:
120 = 120
this confirms that the value of x is good.
