In an indirect proof, we do not directly prove that a given statement is true, but show that all alternatives are false.
Indirect proofs assume the negative, or negation, of the proof to be solved.
For example, if, given limited information, we had to prove that two angles of an isosceles triangle are congruent, we would use the indirect proof principle to first assume that they are different. This is a negation.
The idea is to show that this negation is false. To this end, an indirect proof relies on contradictions in the proof statements.

In general the order of the steps matter. One step needs to follow logically from the other. Think about the problem of getting dressed in the morning: Step 1: put on your underwear. Step 2: put on your pants. Order matters.
