If Tammy is 21 years old now, how old was she 11 years ago? Seems trivial, she was 10 years old.
Now lets assign 21 years old its own name, call it x. How did you arrive at 10 years old? You subtracted 11.
Subtract 11 to both sides.
x-11 = 10
So you just said that 10 was the answer, but clearly x-11 is equivalent to 10 in this problem. So, we can say for any x, 11 years ago, can be represented as x-11.
