Draw a number line

-5 -4 -3 -2 -1  0  1  2  3  4  5

x > 1 says that we want to shade all the
values that are greater than 1.  These
will be all the numbers to the right of 1,
but not including 1.  So we put this "("
at 1 and shade the line to the right and
put an arrow on the right end of the
shaded line, which indicates that the
numbers greater than 1 extend all the
way to the right:

That's all there is to the graph of x > 1

Some teachers and textbooks want you to
use an open circle instead of "(". If so,
the answer would be:
