 The cars are approaching each other, so they are closing the gap at the sum of their rates:
 r = 50+55 = 105

 525 = 105*t
 So,
 t = 5
 .

 distance traveled at 50 mph = 50*5 = 250 miles
 distance traveled at 55 mpg = 55*5 = 275 miles
 total distance traveled = 525 miles.
