Question 490844: amie is six years older than her sister. Eiht years ago she was four times as old as her sister. How old are they now? Answer by Maths68(1474) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let
a=Amie’s current age
s=Sister’s current age
Amie is six years older than her sister mean if we add 6 to her sister’s age both will be of same age
a=s+6 …………(1)
Eight years ago means we have to subtract 8 from their current ages
a-8=s-8
then
she was four times as old as her sister
a-8=4(s-8)
a-8=4s-32
a=4s-32+8
a=4s-24 ………..(2)
Put the value ‘a’ from (1) to (2)
s+6=4s-24
s=4s-24-6
s=4s-30
s-4s=-30
-3s=-30
Divide above equation by -3
-3s/-3=-30/-3
s=10
Put the value of s in (1)
a=s+6
a=10+6
a=16
Amie is 16 and her sister is 10 years old.
