You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4(y+1)=40
---
Divide both sides by 4 to get:
y+1 = 10
----
Subtract 1 from both sides to get:
y = 9

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
or you could
4(y+1)=40
4(y)+4(1)=40 use distributive property
4y+4=40
-4 -4 subtract by 4
4y=36
4y/4=36/4 divide by 4
y=9
