Spike averaged 45 mph driving from Rochester to Syracuse and 49 mph driving from Syracuse to Albany. If he drove a total of 237 miles in 5 hours, then how far is it from Syracuse to Albany?
DISTANCE FROM R TO S =X
DISTANCE FROM S TO A =Y
X+Y=237.........TIME TAKEN = 5 HRS
TIME TO TRAVEL X = X/45
TIME TO TRAVEL Y= Y/49
TOTAL TIME
X/45 + Y/49=5
49X+45Y=5*45*49............II
49(237-Y)+45Y=49*225
4Y=49(237-225)=49*12
Y=49*3=147=DISTANCE FROMSYRACUSE TO ALBANY

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let's assume it's x miles from Rochester to Syracuse
and y miles from Syracuse to Albany
the question wants to know y.
system%28%0D%0Ax%2F45%2By%2F49=5%2C%0D%0Ax%2By=237%29
we're looking for y, so let's get rid of x first
multiply both sides of the first equation by 45
system%28%0D%0Ax%2B45y%2F49=5%2A45%2C%0D%0Ax%2By=237%29
subtract the first equation from the second.
%28x-x%29%2B%28y-45%2F49y%29=237-5%2A45
%284%2F49%29y=237-225
y=12%2A%2849%2F4%29=147
