You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1) The sum of two numbers is 8. One number is 3 times the other.
Find the answer.
two numbers, x & y, write an equation for each statement.
"The sum of two numbers is 8."
x + y = 8
"One number is 3 times the other."
x = 3y
in the 1st equation replace x with 3y and you have
3y + y = 8
4y = 8
y = 8/4
y = 2
I'll let you find x

2) For a Saturday matinee, adult tickets are $4.00 and kids under 12 pay only $2.00.
If 91 tickets are sold for a total of $264.00.
How many of the tickets were sold to kids under 12?
:
Let x = no. of kids under 12 tickets sold
Total ticket sold is 91, therefore:
(91-x) = no. of adult tickets sold
:
the revenue equation
2x + 4(91-x) = 264
2x + 364 - 4x = 264
2x - 4x = 264 - 364
-2x = -100
x = 50 kids tickets
