Question 483875: Please help me solve this problem: " A car started travelling at 60 km/hr. Two hours later, another car started to overtake the first at 80 km/hr. Gasoline cost 45.20 per liter and the second car averages 12 km per liter consumption. How much worth of gasoline did the second car consume in overtaking the first car? "

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A car started travelling at 60 km/hr.
rate = 60 km/hr ; time = x hrs. ; distance = 60x km
----------------------------------------------------------
Two hours later, another car started to overtake the first at 80 km/hr.
rate = 80 km/hr ; time = (x-2) hrs. ; distance = 80(x-2) km
----
Solve:
distance = distance
60x = 80x - 160
-20x = -160
x = 8 hrs (driving time for 1st car)
x-2 = 6 hrs (driving time for 2nd car)
-----------------
Gasoline cost 4.52 per liter and the second car averages 12 km per liter consumption. How much worth of gasoline did the second car consume in overtaking the first car?
---
2nd car distance:
dist = rate*time = 80 km/hr * 6 hrs = 480 km
---
Cost = [480km/12km]*4.52 = 180
