There are 3 ways to pick the first number, then, since you aren't allowed duplicates, there are only 2 ways to pick the second number, and then 1 way to pick the third number. 3 times 2 times 1 is 6, so there are 6 ways to pick the numbers for each of the 2 letters. Total of 12.
