Two ways to do this:

You can draw an altitude and call it h. This splits the equilateral triangle into two 30-60-90 right triangles, each with a leg of 1/2 and the height is sqrt(3)/2. The area is (1/2)(sqrt(3)/2) = sqrt(3)/4.

Or, you can say that the area of the triangle is 1*1*(sin 60)/2 = sqrt(3)/4, same result.
