You can put this solution on YOUR website! A customer in a coffee shop purchases a blend of two coffees: Kenyan, costing $3.50 a pound, and Sri Lankan, costing $5.60 a pound. he buys 3 lb of the blend, which costs him $11.55. How many pounds of each kind went into the mixture?
Use the following formula since this is a linear equation:
(Rate, % or cost of A)(Amount of A) + (Rate, & or cost of B)(Amount of B) = (Total amount C)
.
($3.50)(x) + ($5.60)(3bls. - x) = $11.55 [Plug in the values]
3.50x + 16.8 - 5.60x = 11.55  [Combine like terms]
-2.10x + 16.8 = 11.55 [Solve for x]
-2.10x = -5.25
x = 2.5
2.5lbs of Kenya
3.00 - 2.5 = 0.5lbs of Sri Lankan
.
Check by plugging all of the variables back into the original equation.
($3.50)(2.5) + ($5.60)(3bls. - 2.5) = $11.55
11.55 = 11.55 [Checks out]
